Many assisted living facilities, hospitals, and nursing homes around the country have all benefited from the presence of animal assisted therapy. Dogs are the most common animal used in this type of therapy in the United States, but there are a wide variety of species which have been used in animal assisted therapy. An upcoming training workshop in Albany, Georgia, is looking to educate anyone who is interested in getting involved with this type of work that is helping out thousands of seniors each year. This training workshop will be put on by Paws Patrol, that is part of the Delta Society, which is an organization who is furthering the animal therapy industry. Anyone looking to participate in this workshop needs to have their $60 registration fee in by today, which will also cover the cost of the training manual. The Paws Patrol workshop is taking place 9am – 4:30 p.m. November 6-7, at Phoebe Northwest. A workshop like this is a great way for someone to have their animal trained and evaluated to see if they can become an animal companion and help out those in need at nursing homes, hospitals, and assisted living facilities.
The reason that animal assisted therapy is so successful among seniors is that the animals can lift the spirits of the elderly, and give them a general sense of comfort. These animals who participate in the therapy are comfortable being around lots of people, and enjoy helping the seniors who do benefit from their companionship. In addition to the Delta Society, there are a number of other organizations around the country who work in this field, and help provide animal assisted therapy to those in need.
